Stress

What is happening to your body.

When you are faced with a period of stress your body will release a rush of hormones that elevate your heart rate (to out run that cheetah) boost blood pressure (your heart will beat faster and your blood vessels will narrow), stops digestion (moves blood to the muscles).

Stress then can affect other area and have a range of symptoms such as;

  • TMJ from teeth clenching at night, emotional turmoil or headaches (usually starting at the back and moving to the forehead).

  • Behavioural changes such as addictive tendencies - gambling and substance abuse- alcohol, smoking, drugs, over eating.

  • insomnia, back and neck pain, chronic fatigue,

  • metabolism issues (cortisol increases appetite and cravings)

  • digestive issues, nausea and heartburn, also changes in GUT bacteria

  • Stress can affect the blood cells that help you fight off infection, so you are more likely to get colds and other diseases.

  • Constant stress can increase blood pressure and can increase the risk for stroke.

  • Can increase the danger of heart attacks, particularly if you are often angry and mistrustful.

  • Asthma attack can be worsened.

  • Stress can lead to diminished sexual desire and an inability to achieve orgasm.

  • Nervousness and anxiety (in some cases depression), fidgeting, nail-biting, lateness and trouble focusing, and a lack of interest in work or activities that are normally interesting.

Stress makes it harder to take other steps to improve health, such as giving up smoking or making changes in diet.

What can you do?

First is to recognise your stressors, is it acute or a long term stress - Chronic stress can be harder to recognise as the body does normalise stress levels.

  • Acupuncture can help alleviate stress

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes

  • Allow more time to sleep

  • Move your body

  • Relaxation techniques - meditation, breathing, yoga, massage

  • Speak to a professional - your GP, phycologist

  • Make changes to your lifestyle.

  • Herbal remedies to help with your recovery.

Hope this bit of information helps and as always if you need any advice please do not hesitate to call on 5310 6259 or book online at www.bodyandspinesolutions.com.au.
